Get on Track: Salford

We were in Salford for our first Get on Track project in this area, where we worked with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service as we aimed to get young people back into employment, education or training.

Running from the beginning of January through to the end of June, the DKH Legacy Trust flagship project saw a range of young people go on quite a remarkable journey throughout their time on the programme.

The young people were fortunate enough to be working with a great group of athlete mentors, who really used their experiences in international sport to inspire the group. Adam Whitehead and Jenna Downing, veterans of Get on Track, were working with the young people along with Courtney Fry.

As with all Get on Track projects, community project work was a key component of the course. The group's primary aim was to develop, enhance, maintain and sustain a community asset in the local area.

The project finished with the celebration 'Go!' event, held in Worsley. The event celebrated the success of the young recruits who had successfully completed the programme, and now have the skills, confidence and self-belief that had previously eluded them.

Having now completed the course, the recruits will embark on their futures, where they'll be starting a host of new challenges. 60% of the group will be going into jobs, higher education or volunteering roles this summer.

Olympic boxer Courtney Fry, who experienced his first Get on Track in Salford, said: "Working on my first Get on Track project has been exhilarating. This project is like no other and it's great to have been able to work so closely with the recruits. I've really enjoyed sharing my skills and experience as an athlete to inspire these young people."
