Get on Track: Haringey

Working in partnership with Haringey Council, we supported young people from The Octagon, a pupil referral unit in north London, on our Get on Track programme in Haringey.

Throughout Get on Track, the group went on a journey that focussed on personal development alongside challenges and work in the local community.

Sponsored by UBS and the Mayor of London's Sports Participation Fund, the group of young people were even given an introductory boxing session, led by British champion Hannah Beharry and Commonwealth gold medallist, Courtney Fry. Not only did this allow the group to try a new sport for the first time, but it allowed the young people to understand and appreciate the determination, patience and confidence required to reach the highest points, not just in sport, but also in life.

Alongside Hannah and Courtney was Olympian Adam Whitehead, who mentored and supported the group throughout the entire project. This included one trip to a local primary school, where the Get on Track recruits led a multi-sport session for the school pupils.

Dame Kelly Holmes said: "Many of these young people have faced some tough times - they may have to support themselves or are surrounded by really negative influences. Quite honestly, most people have no idea about what some young people have to deal with at such an early age. I am really chuffed that my charity, the DKH Legacy Trust, along with Haringey Council and UBS, has made it possible for these young people in Haringey to have a chance of getting their lives on track and now have real hope for a better future."

One young person from the project said: "The athlete mentors have taught me that if I really want something I can get it, I just need to take responsibility for my own actions."
