The 2010 National Conference took place at Trent Bridge, the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket on Wednesday 31st March and Thursday 1st April. The event, hosted by Dame Kelly herself, was a huge success as it brought together many retired athletes, no fewer than 32 NGBs and a wide variety of esteemed business people, both local to Nottingham and from around the UK.

The conference, designed as part of our National Support Programme to help retired elite sports performers improve their skills, included workshops run by many highly regarded speakers such as Jeremy Lazarus (Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming), Pauline Harrison (CCPR) and Bev James (MD of The Coaching Academy).

The topic areas covered by the workshops were wide ranging and very useful to the athletes. These included information on personal coaching, how to set up a business and a tailored package for NGB delegates.

The opportunity to network was considered important and several sessions throughout the two days were organised to help the mixture of retired athletes who attended, including athletes the Trust already works with alongside potential new recruits, meet people who may be key to their future careers.

Karen Atkinson (England Netball) said "The DKH Legacy Trust Conference gave me confidence that I would be able to use my skills gained whilst playing netball for England, in retirement. It made me excited about getting involved in some of their projects."

BOA Programme Director, Bev Salt, attended the conference and announced the newly-formed Athletes' Commission, an advisory group that has been set up to ensure that the viewpoint and interests of our Olympic athletes are at the forefront of every decision taken by the BOA.

With the help of our partners the BAC and Sport2Business amongst others, DKH Legacy Trust recently held a "Harnessing Your Talents" conference in Leeds.

This event pulled a tremendous amount of highly regarded companies and exceptional speakers, such as Steve Parry (Olympic Medallist, Swimming), Jennie Price (CEO of Sport England), Zara Hyde Peters (CEO British Triathlon), Jeremy Lazarus (Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming), Russell Yeomans (Co-Chair Sport2Business) and Odgers, Ray and Berndtson. These specialists discussed topics varying from setting up your own business, developing interview techniques, increasing the chance of future success using NLP, goal setting, working in youth engagement and roles available within the sports sector.

The networking evening was also a particular success, pulling together the likes of the Adidas Group, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and British Athletes' Commission. We have had great feedback from both the tutors and elite performers so far... 100% of those who filled out the questionnaire would like to work with us in the future, and 95% rated the event either 'very good' or 'excellent' (of which 68% said it was 'excellent'). We are so pleased that this kind of support is making a real difference to the future direction of the elite performers we are working with.
