“You can achieve anything you want to if you have the desire and commitment to follow it through”
Biography:
Hugh is an Olympic Tornado sailor and professional skipper of yachts, but specifically Extreme 40 and F18 Catamarans. He got into sailing because his dad put him in a boat when he was about a year old and then bought him his first boat, an Optimist at age 6, called Peter Pan.
His best sailing memory is sailing out of the marina on the first day of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, to crowds cheering, union jacks waving and people singing ‘Rule Britannia’. Hugh came a strong 6th at 2000 Sydney Olympics, but came 2nd in his campaign for Athens.
Despite having started his campaign for Beijing, he pulled out deciding that he wanted to do performance ‘Big Boat’ sailing which is a non-Olympic sport. At first he tried to balance a Sailing Coaching job whilst jetting across Europe for various competitions and events, but recently took the decision to sail full time.
Now he balances professional racing for yacht racing campaigns, with being a sales agent for several brands of sailing merchandise in the UK, coaching for sailing teams in developing nations, and training athletes who want to succeed at the Olympics.
